Job Summary

The MVW Law Department provides legal support and legal services to all aspects of the Company's business.

The paralegal in this position will be a member of the Law Department's Litigation & Compliance Group. The basic functions of this position are to conduct factual investigations, legal research, and document review; draft and organize correspondence and documents; update and maintain litigation databases; manage small claims matters; and assist in special projects involving litigation cases and subject matter under the direction of an attorney.

Expected Contributions

  • Assist in-house and outside counsel in discovery and factual investigation by collecting and reviewing in-house records to determine what is responsive to document production requests and by interviewing company associates to develop factual chronologies and other information relevant to issues at hand. May require travel to continue document search and production and witness interviewing.
  • Assist in-house and outside counsel to review, investigate, and respond to correspondence directed to the Law Department or the company.
  • Interview company associates and collect and review in-house documents. Prepare draft answers to interrogatories and other discovery requests.
  • Assist with responses within a required time frame to document-only subpoenas; contact various company departments and properties to request specific documents responsive to a subpoena. Review and assemble documents, and draft correspondence and affidavits or certifications as needed. Forward to appropriate court or requesting party within required time frame.
  • Assist in managing processes required to track subpoenas and other legal process served on the company.
  • Assist in interceding on behalf of business unit associates in subpoenas requesting personal appearance. Negotiate with issuing agency and law firm alternative actions and/or the times and dates of appearance. Respond to questions from business units regarding subpoenas received at properties.
  • Investigate miscellaneous and small claims litigation matters and advise in-house counsel as requested.
  • Prepare correspondence, including:
    • Letters that summarize results of factual investigation for outside counsel;
    • Letters to courts and requesting law firms in response to subpoenas and document production;
    • Summaries of factual investigations (document review, client review) for in-house counsel for cases not requiring outside counsel; and
    • Miscellaneous draft correspondence for in-house counsel review (e.g., letters of intent to defend, confirmation letters regarding the granting of extensions in filing response to complaints and affidavits).
  • Assist in responding to questions regarding garnishments from the company's Payroll Department. Work with Payroll Department and issuing agency to resolve judgments against the company. Respond to questions from business units regarding associate garnishments.
  • Assist in-house counsel with litigation matters. Draft simple pleadings and motions for attorney review. Conduct legal research. Maintain litigation case files.
  • Perform other duties as requested by in-house counsel or others within the Law Department.

Candidate Profile



Education

  • Four-year college degree or equivalent qualifying work experience with an excellent performance record
  • Certificate from an ABA-approved paralegal program or qualifying legal experience

Experience

  • Minimum of 0 to 3 years experience as a litigation paralegal or comparable position in a law firm, corporate law department, or government agency
