Position Summary

As a member of the professional staff, contributes specialized knowledge and skill in a discipline (e.g. Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Operations Planning & Support, Sales & Marketing) area to support team and/or department business objectives. Generally works under limited supervision, but within established guidelines, producing and analyzing more complex business information to assist in the decision making process.

Job Summary

The Insurance and Risk Management Department procures and manages MVW's risk management and insurance programs to protect the corporation, its employees and customers against various property, liability, financial and employment risks including insurance procurement, claims management and risk finance.

The Claims team is responsible for determining coverage, negotiating and settling claims, and managing third party claims adjusters. The Manager position will coordinate the handling and oversight of claims for workers compensation and related employment insurance claims. Such work will include partnering with risk management leadership, claims professionals, corporate departments such as Human Resources, Legal, and Global Safety and Security, resort operations and brokers. The position is responsible for resolution of claims to achieve the best possible financial conclusion.

Expected Contributions

  • Performs more complex quantitative and qualitative analysis for business processes and/or projects. Often manages small projects, business processes or parts of larger ones.
  • Responds to, solves and makes decisions on more complex/non-routine business requests with limited to moderate risk.
  • Responsible for own work and contributing to team, department and/or business results. May direct work of non-management staff.
  • Assists more senior associates in achieving business results by:

- identifying opportunities to enhance the effectiveness of business processes.

- providing training and technical guidance to less senior staff, where appropriate, and serving as point-of-contact for problem resolution.

- participating in setting department operating plans.

- recognizing and celebrating team successes.

- achieving results against budget within scope of responsibility.

  • Demonstrates an awareness of personal strengths and areas for improvement and acts independently to improve and increase skills and knowledge.

Specific Expected Contributions
  • Essential functions of the role
  • Manage workers compensation and other employment related claims globally and primary responsibility for settlement approval and reserve concurrence up to $100,000
  • Review adequacy of reserve and help develop disposition strategies
  • Responsible for providing technical guidance in the investigation, reserving, and disposition of claims
  • Manage and resolve issues with subpoenas, request for production, answers to interrogatories
  • Keep current on coverage applicable workers compensation laws
  • Access Westlaw for case studies that support our defense
  • Work with the Safety & Security team to identify claims trends and coordinating investigations and develop related executive level reporting
  • After conducting a thorough claims review, provide concurrence or rejections of denials
  • Monitor the work product of dedicated adjuster teams
  • Develop action plans to guide claims to the best possible resolution
  • Lead quarterly claims reviews
  • Provide guidance, recommendations or direction to dedicated units of adjusters
  • Author a quarterly Lessons from Losses to be distributed to Operations and Executive Leadership
  • Responsible for the bi-annual dashboard to measure the success of the Nurse Care Program
  • Conduct weekly meetings with Nurse Care Manager
  • Work closely with the Nurse Care Manager and HR team for return to work program and other employee related matters
  • Create presentations and provide training to operations to assist our loss control efforts
  • Assist Insurance team with potentially high-risk business case reviews and provide support and guidance as needed
  • Provide the law department/litigation group support and guidance as needed for insured claims
  • Special projects as needed

Candidate Profile

Successful candidates should possess knowledge and experience and demonstrate strong leadership and relationship skills as follows:

Generally a professional position with specific knowledge in a discipline (e.g., Accounting, Human Resources, Information Technology). College degree and/or relevant experience typically required.

Specific Candidate Profile

Education requirements

  • High Diploma required
  • Four-year degree from an accredited college strongly preferred
  • AIC, ARM, CPCU preferred and/or professional claims training from an insurance company of recognized responsibility

Experience level

  • Minimum of 7 years claims adjusting/oversight experience

Preferred certifications

  • AIC, ARM, CPCU preferred and/or professional claims training from an insurance company of recognized responsibility
