CLS Band Generic Position Summary

As a member of the professional staff, contributes specialized knowledge and skill in a discipline (e.g. Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Operations Planning & Support, Sales & Marketing) area to support team and/or department business objectives. Generally works under limited supervision, but within established guidelines, producing and analyzing more complex business information to assist in the decision making process.

 Specific Job Summary

This position is responsible for architecture, engineering, and operational activities such as design, planning, integration, build, test, and day-to-day support of backup, disaster recovery, and data protection technologies used at MVW.


  • Works independently as a lead to provide design, engineering, and consultation options for the use of DR and data/system protection technologies.
  • Proactively ensures day-to-day operations of the backups and DR environments are performing as expected, to include all technical (troubleshooting and resolution) and process (operational work flows, monitoring and response, defining incident and resolution delegation to SMEs) aspects.
  • Serves as primary technical escalation point on issues threatening the proper protection of critical MVW data according to defined MVW backup, restore, and DR defined SLAs and expectations.
  • Trains members of Information Resources on all aspects of backup technology and process.
  • Will provide three tier support and troubleshooting services for backup management products.
  • Services are global in nature and will participate in on-call support.
  • Resolve all backup, restore, and DR issues independently according to IT procedures, mandates, and policies. When appropriate, this includes invoking an effective and timely escalation approach for all critical backup issues that cannot be resolved within this role's ability, scope, or influence.

Specific Expected Contributions

Key Accountabilities:

  • Leads or executes all strategic activities relating to backup technologies including analysis, research, design, testing, and securing the environment.
  • Ensures all aspects of data and system protection in accordance to defined MVW SLAs, expectations, and directives.
  • Performs backups and restores of systems or data as requested or as team capacity dictates.
  • Provides primary support on all backup and restore related hardware (encryption devices, tape libraries, etc.).
  • Provides operational feedback to processes and projects for infrastructure design, engineering, and integration of backup technologies.
  • Gathers requirements for new initiatives and projects in relation to data protection needs and maps those requirements to build baselines.
  • Facilitates root cause analysis and triage services relating to backup technology and data protection/restoration. This will include error resolution, performance, capacity, and functionality.
  • Defines or assists in setting various Infrastructure standards as they relate to backup, restore, DR, and data protection objectives. Ensures day-to-day environment alignment to infrastructure standards.
  • Takes a lead role in developing and participates with, monitoring procedures for backup, restore, and DR related alerts.
  • Follows all Backup Administration, Change, Release, Incident, Problem, Security, and Configuration Management processes, policies, operating plans, and mandates.
  • Works with external parties on matters relating backup and DR technologies as a lead.
  • Establishes very strong working relationships with internal teams on the protection of data and systems.
  • Works with vendors to resolve issues.
  • Completes tasks assigned and project work within scope, priority, timelines, and budget.
  • Continually increases knowledge of backup technologies and best practices.
  • Continually increases required knowledge of the technology that is being protected through the backup framework.
  • Facilitates all technical activities around disaster recovery design, testing, documentation, and execution.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of all backup, data protection, and DR documentation in a timely manner.
  • Performs day-to-day technical coaching and guidance to other backup administration staff.
  • Participates in evaluation of backup technologies, related operational readiness tasks, and procedural repeatability.

Specific Candidate Profile


  • BA/BS technology related degree or equivalent technical certification and experience.



  • Requires 8-10 years' work experience in similar backup administration position or having equivalent skills and experience.
  • Experience must include 6 recent years demonstrating success in a position responsible for backup and recovery frameworks using industry standard enterprise backup and DR software, executing transactional replication, providing prompt access to messaging and authentication, and delivering rapid operating system/hardware recovery.
  • Experience must also consist of: working within a face-paced environment requiring effective multi-tasking and priority assessment skills, performing hardware support in related environments, and having a central role in a successfully tested Disaster Recovery plan. Protecting a multi-site, global computing environment with non-stop operations, running multiple OS platforms, and varied software configurations, to include large file servers, RDBMS, and e-mail systems that require encryption for alignment to security mandates (i.e. PCI, HIPPA, etc.). Proven technical knowledge of various operating systems and applications such as Exchange, Oracle, and SQL Server are required.
  • Working within IT industry standard frameworks to measure, support, and improve a backup environment such as ITIL.
  • Active Directory, Linux, windows, VMware ESX and SRM, Netbackup, SSR, WanSync, RedGate, and R1 technologies (or market equivalents). Experience in these areas must demonstrate full understanding of restore and DR options for such systems.
  • Backups related hardware such as tape libraries and encryption devices.
  • Encryption key management relating to backup strategies.
  • Securing backup technology and protecting data against vulnerabilities and threats.
  • Alignment to industry standards such as PCI, HIPPA, Sarbanes-Oxley, etc.
  • Upstream and downstream network equipment, load balancing, dns, and application server integration.
  • Multi-site DR plans that perform against RPO and RTO objectives, to include all technologies mentioned here within.
  • Data replication technologies and maintaining data integrity with transactional applications and database systems.
  • Applying industry standard release and configuration management techniques for deployments with focus on build automation, validation, and scripting in relation to backup and DR technology environments.
  • Demonstrating operational repeatability and improvement is crucial.
  • Working independently and demonstrating successful alignment to defined scope, budget, standards, and schedule.
  • Verbal and written communication, as well as, strong team collaboration.
  • Experience working in an environment that measures and improves the backup frameworks through industry standard IT processes. ITIL experience is a very strong plus.
  • Experience with standard enterprise monitoring tools and procedures is a plus.
  • PowerShell and other scripting experience are a plus.
